Step-by-step washing guide for hoodies and tees
Step 1: Turn your garment inside out
This simple action protects the printed surface from rubbing against other clothes. The friction inside a washing machine is the number one cause of early cracking. Take the extra 10 seconds to flip your xQc tee or hoodie before loading.
Pro tip: Use a mesh laundry bag for extra protection, especially for items with large back prints.
Step 2: Choose cold water and a gentle cycle
Heat softens the plastisol ink used in screen printing, making it prone to peel. Cold water keeps the print firm while still removing dirt and sweat. Set your machine to the delicate or gentle cycle - this reduces agitation.
Common mistake: Assuming hot water cleans better. For cotton-blend merch, cold water with a quality detergent does the same job without the damage.
Step 3: Use a mild detergent without bleach or softeners
Bleach-based detergents attack the dye in dark fabrics, causing uneven fading. Fabric softeners coat the fibers and trap odors over time. Stick to a free-and-clear liquid detergent - I recommend a small amount, about 1 tablespoon.
Pro tip: For stains, pretreat with a tiny drop of dish soap directly on the spot, then rub gently with an old toothbrush before washing.
Step 4: Air dry - skip the dryer
The dryer's high heat is the enemy of screen prints. Even low heat can cause cracking after multiple cycles. Instead, lay your xQc hoodie flat on a drying rack or hang it on a padded hanger away from direct sunlight.
Time estimate: Air drying takes 6-12 hours depending on humidity. Overnight is usually enough. If you must use a dryer, set it to the lowest heat (air fluff) for just 10-15 minutes to remove excess moisture, then air dry the rest.
Step 5: Roll or fold, never wring
Wringing twists the fabric and distorts the print. After washing, gently press the garment between two towels to absorb water. Then roll it up like a burrito, press again, and unroll before laying flat to dry.
